The past simple looks like the easiest tense in English — just add -ed — until the irregular verbs show up: go, see, have, make, take, come, none of which follow the rule, and all of which appear constantly in everyday speech.

The most important irregular verbs in context: go→went, see→saw, have→had, make→made, take→took, come→came, give→gave, get→got. The exam uses each in a sentence.
Short verbs ending in consonant-vowel-consonant: double the last consonant. stop→stopped, plan→planned. Long verbs or ending in -e: just add -d (liked, used).
Past simple with specific time: "I went yesterday." Present perfect with no specific time or relevance to present: "I have been there." The exam tests this contrast.
"A student wrote "I goed to the park." After seeing go→went in context and understanding that irregular verbs don't take -ed, they learn the pattern for the whole irregular group."

Regular past: verb + -ed. If it ends in -e, just add -d (liked). If consonant+y, change to -ied (tried).
Negatives and questions: always use did/didn't + BASE verb. "Did you go?" NOT "Did you went?"
