Present: is/are + pp. Past: was/were + pp. Present perfect: has/have been + pp. Future: will be + pp. Modal: must/can/should be + pp. One pattern, all tenses.
Use passive when the agent is unknown ("The window was broken"), unimportant ("English is spoken here"), or you want to emphasise the object rather than the subject.
Add "by + agent" when the agent matters: "The Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci." Omit "by" when the agent is obvious or unknown.
"A student struggled with "The cake was eaten by the children" — they couldn't identify the subject. After understanding that the grammatical subject is "the cake" (receiver of the action), passive sentences became clear."
