⚖️ Solve equations step by step

Linear and quadratic, with x on both sides, brackets or fractions. You will see every step, the check and, on the graph, why that is the solution.

Equation

Write it with an = sign. Without =, it is taken as equal to 0. x², x^2, 0.5x, 3(x − 2) and fractions like x/2 all work.

  1. 2x + 3 = x − 1
  2. Move everything to the left and collect like terms:
  3. x + 4 = 0
  4. x = −4

Check

  1. Substitute each solution into both sides: they must match.
  2. With x = −4: left = −5, right = −5 ✓

On the graph

  1. Each side is a function: y = 2x + 3 (blue) and y = x − 1 (pink). The solutions are the x values where the two graphs cross.
