Biology Exam — Organelles, Cell Types and Functions

Every known form of life is made up of cells, the smallest structural and functional unit capable of carrying out the vital functions: nutrition, response and reproduction. It was the scientist Robert Hooke who coined the term "cell" in 1665 after observing cork under a microscope, though it would take almost two centuries for cell theory to be formulated as it's known today.
The exam first distinguishes between prokaryotic cells (with no defined nucleus, like bacteria) and eukaryotic cells (with a nucleus, like those of animals, plants and fungi), and then between animal and plant cells, whose key differences are the cell wall, chloroplasts and the large central vacuole found in plant cells. It also covers organelles and their functions — mitochondria, ribosomes, the Golgi apparatus — and the processes of photosynthesis, cellular respiration and mitosis.
Each question comes with an explanation that links the organelle to its real function, so it isn't memorised as a meaningless list.

Tricks and techniques to master this topic faster:
Key difference: prokaryote (bacteria) has NO nucleus. Eukaryote (animals, plants, fungi) has a nucleus with a membrane.
Plant vs animal cell: plant has CELL WALL + CHLOROPLASTS + LARGE VACUOLE. Animal cell has none of these three.
Mitochondrion = energy (cellular respiration). Chloroplast = photosynthesis (only in light-using cells). Ribosome = proteins (in all cells).
Photosynthesis: CO₂ + H₂O + light → glucose + O₂. Cellular respiration: glucose + O₂ → ATP + CO₂ + H₂O. They are opposite processes.
