Balancing equations is one of the most important and abstract topics in secondary school. Turning it into balancing a scale makes it intuitive, with no fear of where to start.
Looking for the smallest whole-number coefficients trains the lowest common multiple and proportional reasoning applied to a meaningful problem.
"The equation «H₂ + O₂ → H₂O» appears. The student puts a 2 in front of H₂ and another in front of H₂O, leaves O₂ at 1, and the scale balances: 4 H and 2 O on each side."

Write the unbalanced reaction and make a table with the number of atoms of each element on each side.
Start with the element that appears in the fewest formulas and add coefficients.
Leave oxygen or hydrogen for last, as they usually appear in several substances.
When done, check the coefficients are the smallest possible whole numbers.
