Multiplication is repeated addition: multiplying 4×3 is the same as adding 4 three times. Mastering the times tables from 1 to 10 is one of the cornerstones of mathematics, because division, fractions, percentages and algebra all depend on them.
Learning the tables by heart frees the mind to solve more complex problems without getting stuck on the arithmetic. Tricks such as the nine times table on your fingers, or remembering that multiplying by 10 just adds a zero, help to fix them. The goal is not to know the tables — it is to have them so internalised they come instantly. The exam repeats the hardest ones (7×8, 6×9, 8×9) more frequently.
We combine multiplication with addition and subtraction to practise the order of operations. 3×4+7 is not the same as 3×(4+7) — a critical distinction in Secondary.

Tricks and techniques to master this topic faster:
Hard tables (6,7,8,9): practise these more than the easy ones. 7×7=49, 7×8=56, 8×8=64, 9×9=81.
Trick for 9: 9×n → the digit sum of the result is always 9. 9×7=63 (6+3=9). The first digit is always n-1: 9×7=6_.
To multiply by 11: 11×n (1-9) = nn. 11×7=77. For larger numbers: 11×35 = 3(3+5)5 = 385.
Order of operations: brackets first, then multiplication and division, finally addition and subtraction (BODMAS).
