What this exam is like

The Past Simple exam has 35 multiple-choice questions across these levels: Primary (25), Secondary (35). Each attempt draws 10 at random from the level you choose. You get two tries per question, and each answer is explained afterwards. At the end you see your grade.

Sample questions

  1. 1. What is the past simple of "go"?

    • goed
    • going
    • gone
    • went
    Show the answer

    ✅ went

"Went" is the irregular past of "go". Common irregulars: go→went, see→saw, eat→ate, have→had, come→came, take→took.

  2. 2. Complete the negative: "She ___ go to school yesterday."

    • didn't
    • doesn't
    • don't
    • wasn't
    Show the answer

    ✅ didn't

Negatives in the past use "didn't" for every person, and then the verb goes back to its BASE form: didn't go, not "didn't went". The auxiliary already carries the past.

  3. 3. Complete: "I ___ that book last month." (read)

    • read
    • readed
    • reading
    • reads
    Show the answer

    ✅ read

"Read" is spelt the same in the present and the past, but the past is pronounced /red/. "Last month" is the only clue.
