Sample questions

  1. 1. How is the passive voice formed?

    • be + past participle
    • do + infinitive
    • have + past participle
    • will + base verb
    Show the answer

    ✅ be + past participle

Passive = subject + be (in the right tense) + past participle. "The book is written." "The cake was eaten." Be changes tense; the participle stays the same.

  2. 2. Complete: "These cars ___ in Germany."

    • are made
    • is made
    • is making
    • was made
    Show the answer

    ✅ are made

"These cars" is plural, so "be" goes plural too: are made. In the passive the verb agrees with the thing receiving the action, because that is now the subject of the sentence.

  3. 3. Passive of "They gave Anna a prize", with Anna as the subject.

    • A prize was given Anna.
    • Anna gave a prize.
    • Anna is giving a prize.
    • Anna was given a prize.
    Show the answer

✅ Anna was given a prize.

Verbs with two objects (give, send, offer, tell) have two passives, and English prefers the person: "Anna was given a prize".
