What this exam is like

The Conditionals & Wishes exam has 24 multiple-choice questions across these levels: Secondary (14), Sixth Form (24). Each attempt draws 10 at random from the level you choose. You get two tries per question, and each answer is explained afterwards. At the end you see your grade.

Sample questions

  1. 1. If you heat ice, it ___.

    • melted
    • melting
    • melts
    • would melt
    Show the answer

    ✅ melts

Zero conditional (general truths): If + present simple, present simple. Heating ice always makes it melt.

  2. 2. Which sentence is a first conditional?

    • If it had been sunny, we’d have gone to the beach.
    • If it were sunny, we’d go to the beach.
    • If it’s sunny, we always go to the beach.
    • If it’s sunny, we’ll go to the beach.
    Show the answer

✅ If it’s sunny, we’ll go to the beach.

First conditional = If + present simple, will + base verb: a real future possibility. The last one is a zero conditional (a habit).

  3. 3. It’s late. It’s time we ___ home.

    • go
    • have gone
    • went
    • will go
    Show the answer

    ✅ went

"It’s (high) time + subject + past simple" says something should already be happening: "It’s time we went home". (Without a subject: "It’s time to go".)
